The news: Amazon is launching a GLP-1 management program through its One Medical primary care arm.
Here’s how it works: One Medical members and Amazon customers without a One Medical membership can receive prescriptions and other weight management support services through the program.
Why it matters: Amazon’s GLP-1 program targets a growing field of healthcare companies and retailers that are capitalizing on demand for weight loss drugs by offering fast, online access to prescriptions. Fundamentally, these players use popular GLP-1 medications as a hook to draw users to their platforms and drive broader business. Lower cash-pay GLP-1 prices are attracting more companies into the space, as most operate outside insurance, while new oral options expand access to a broader customer base.
However, unlike some competitors, Amazon's program integrates obesity treatment into routine clinical care versus standalone, prescription-focused telehealth visits. This approach may enable more appropriate monitoring around lifestyle changes and side effect management. This could also address an area of concern for roughly two-thirds of physicians who question whether non-traditional telehealth providers offer sufficient oversight when prescribing GLP-1s, per a December 2025 Sermo survey.
Implications for telehealth companies and weight loss drug sellers: Amazon’s brand power puts some pressure on leading telehealth providers in the GLP-1 space, such as Hims & Hers, Ro, WeightWatchers, along with numerous smaller players.
However, new GLP-1 prescriptions will be limited to One Medical members, while non-members can only get renewals. That’s a clear move by Amazon to reel in more primary care subscribers by making One Medical subscriptions more appealing. However, restricting access to new prescriptions instead of offering them broadly also tempers the competitive threat to established weight loss drug sellers.
