The news: Venmo is now a payment option within The Knot’s Wedding Registry, per a press release.
Users will be able to send money to couples’ cash funds through their Venmo wallet using connected cards, bank accounts, or cash balances.
Why this matters: Younger couples’ nuptials are a key volume opportunity for Venmo, which the P2P provider has already made significant investments to reach elsewhere:
Gifting on Venmo also helps Gen Zers centralize funds in one place: 68% of couples want to track their gifts all in one place, per a survey fielded by The Knot. Young married couples also factor ease of gifting as a top priority for their guests: 89% of surveyed couples care about making gifts simple to complete.
Implications for payment providers: P2P providers have an opportunity to push into a new era of wedding registries that are largely geared for cash gifts.
Older generations may have needed physical goods to build a household with their new spouses, but Gen Zers who cohabitate before marriage tend to live together for 2.3 years before going to the courthouse, per the National Center for Family & Marriage Research. With financial readiness at the top of Gen Zers concerns, contributing toward a down payment or a honeymoon fund connects more with this cohort.
