The news: Small business insurers are beginning to respond to a shift in customer behavior as entrepreneurs increasingly use AI assistants to research business decisions—including insurance. One early example is Simply Business, which launched an app within ChatGPT that generates an indicative insurance price after users provide just their business type, estimated annual revenue, and ZIP code. Users can then complete the purchase on the Simply Business website, per PYMNTS.
Zooming in: The move addresses one of the biggest friction points in small business insurance: Obtaining a quote often requires entrepreneurs to navigate multiple insurer or broker websites and complete lengthy applications before receiving even an estimated price.
At the same time, small business owners are turning to AI assistants for guidance on starting, growing, and protecting their businesses. As those tools become trusted advisors, users are beginning to expect conversations to progress from information to action.
Instead of simply asking where to buy insurance, a business owner might ask ChatGPT whether they need professional liability coverage, what insurance is required before hiring an employee, or how much a policy is likely to cost. That creates an opportunity for insurers to meet customers at the moment they recognize a need—before they've begun requesting quotes or comparing providers.
Why it matters: The shift changes how insurers compete for small business customers. Traditionally, insurers fought for visibility through search rankings, advertising, broker relationships, and comparison marketplaces. As AI assistants become a starting point for business research, visibility will depend on whether insurers' products, pricing, and expertise can surface naturally within those conversations. Rather than simply driving traffic to a website, insurers have an opportunity to influence purchase decisions earlier in the customer journey, when business owners are still evaluating their options and defining the problem they need to solve.
Implications for insurers: Small business insurance has long suffered from a high-friction buying experience. As AI assistants become part of the small business decision-making process, insurers have an opportunity to redesign that journey. Instead of asking customers to invest time before receiving value, conversational AI can provide education and indicative pricing upfront, then guide users into a full application once they're ready to buy.
The winners won't necessarily be the insurers with the most sophisticated chatbot. Rather, they'll be those that integrate into workflows where small business owners already seek advice, reducing friction and capturing purchase intent before customers have chosen where to shop.
